Dr2 VIEW: Songs about the road, good women lost, bad women kept and rough times …that sounds like the blues and it’s what you will find on The Muggs new disc titled “On With The Show”…and the blues have never sounded so good!! The Muggs, the Detroit Music Awards “Outstanding Rock Artist/Group” award winner, prove they are worthy of this award and many more with this 11-track, rock-and-blues masterpiece. From 1 to 11 this collection sweats passion and bleeds emotion. Only Danny Methric can pull off the guitar licks you are treated to on this Disc. His is a talent on par with any of the classic rock/blues guitar masters; Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Santana, and B.B. King, to name just a few. We have to also give props to the rhythm section of Tony Denardo and Matt Rost who no doubt lay the foundation for their blues infused rock & roll. One of the most notable changes, from the debut offering from the Muggs, and this disc is that there is a much stronger Bass/Drum line throughout. The pounding backbeats set off Methrics’ guitar flourishes much more dramatically and keep your head bobbing and toe tapping through the entire LP. The tracks were all recorded at Tempermill Studios with Jim Kissling behind the controls and their fingerprints are all over this production. The disc opens with a classic blues lyric “Motown Blues” about Detroit and troubled times that segues directly into the show-opening type of jam-fest “Slow Curve”. This is what the Muggs do so well live, control the tempo..…slow then fast, rising and falling and sweeping the crowd along with them for the entire show. Incredible! The rest of the tunes are vintage Muggs as well, drawing on classic blues themes, blended with greasy Detroit rock-and-roll. The title track, “On With The Show” is the classic road song, with the lament… “It’s all that we know, On with the show”. The Muggs have had their trying times but it is always “on with the show”. As long as we are on the subject of lyrics, we have to mention something that has been stuck in our head since “The Best Cover Band in the World” competition was on Fox. Danny Methric can sing!! He sings the blues! You can’t find a blues singer with a “classic” voice, ain’t no such creature. So, if Dickie, or Dicko, or Dickw@d, or whatever his name is can’t appreciate it, I guess we need to forgive him, he is an Aussie after all, the blues are American, he just doesn’t know any better. No one, and I repeat, No one could sing these songs any better than Methric. If you ever caught a live Muggs’ gig you know it’s all about the show, and he can sing and play with anybody. The Muggs on stage are unparalleled! For us at DR2, the Muggs have come to symbolize the “Detroit” sound. A style of music that has deep roots that span decades and yet somehow sound remains fresh. If Detroit had a soundtrack, it would feature Danny, Tony, and Matt. Their “muggs” are the face of Detroit! (pun intended) So, in short, buy this disc. If you are a fan of classic, crunchy, rock-and-roll, blues jams you have to own this one! And you can buy your own as well as download the lyrics at their website www.themuggs.com. But don’t stop there, go see ‘em live, you won’t be sorry. Remember, Detroit Rock Review is the only place for local music news and reviews!! Support local music before it’s gone! Keep Rockin’ D;)
